What are STIs
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are infections that are passed from one person to another through close sexual contact or unprotected sex. Some STIs can be cured and others can be effectively treated and managed, enabling individuals to live healthy and safe lives.
STIs & STDs
While STDs are caused by STIs, not all sexually transmitted infections show symptoms or turn into a disease. It is therefore important to test for STIs so they can be treated and managed appropriately to prevent further complications or long-term health problems.
Get tested to live sure
Getting tested is the best way to prevent and manage STIs. If you are diagnosed with an STI, you can get treatment to stay healthy and prevent exposing your partners. STIs often go undetected because many times they do not cause any symptoms. Early detection and treatment helps avoid health complications and helps protect your sexual partners.

How to prevent STIs
A few precautions and habits can go a long way to prevent STIs. Follow these tips to minimize the chances of getting an STI;
- Use a condom correctly every time you have sex
- Have fewer partners. The more people you have sex with, the greater your chances of getting an STI. Ask new partners about STI testing
- If it is relevant to you, explore being sexually active with only one person, who has mutually agreed to be active sexually only with you
- Avoid mixing drugs and alcohol with sex. Getting drunk or high can affect your ability to make smart decisions about safer sex
- Avoid sexual activities that tear or break skin – use lubricants for anal sex
- Consult a health care provider in case you or your partner have symptoms or signs of an STI
- Get vaccinated against Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and HPV
- Consider starting pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), which is a medicine that protects you against HIV infection. You should still use condoms if you are taking PrEP to prevent other STIs
